s
graduates of the Royal Jubilee Hospital School of Nursing, we each share in
the ninety-year history of the school; a rich history that began with the
first graduating class of 1892 and continued on until the final grad class of
1983. Ninety years of service and of change: change in the school, the
Hospital, and in the community of Victoria at large. |

ur website has
been designed to be not only a means of celebrating a proud past, but also as
a practical resource as we deal with the challenges of the present. It
promises to be a passport to nostalgia with its online archival photos and
documents, while also serving a valuable resource for information about
Alumnae programmes and current and upcoming events. In addition, our site
will offer a 21st Century solution that will help reunite our members - no
matter where in the world they may be! |

nd keeping with
the Alumnae Association mandate, this site exists to create and promote a
common fellowship and to advance in every way the interests of all graduates
of the Royal Jubilee Hospital School of Nursing.

In 1995 the
Alumnae Association of the Royal Jubilee Hospital School of Nursing,
together with the Greater Victoria Hospitals Foundation (in consultation
with the Capital Health Region) took responsibility for the restoration of
the Pemberton Memorial Chapel. Through the generosity of individuals,
families and businesses in the Victoria area $800,000 has been raised and
the Chapel was restored and reopened June 20, 2003.
Since it was
opened, the Chapel has enjoyed overwhelming success as a place of quiet
solitude as evidenced by the number of fondly worded comments and signatures
in our visitors' book. An organist fills the Chapel with beautiful music
when he plays the Casavant organ every Friday. The Chapel has been witness
to weddings, baptisms and memorial services. Also, it is the proud recipient
of The Heritage Building Restoration Award for 2004 given by the Victoria
Real Estate Board, Commercial Builders Division.

In recognition
of the Alumnae work in the Chapel restoration, the hospital administration
granted us the use of the downstairs area, in perpetuity, as a home for our
archives and historical documents. Our collections are an outstanding record
of our school, and also reflect the history of women and nursing in Canada.
The archives area was completed in the fall of 2005 and now the task of
sorting and organizing the acquisitions has begun. Please visit our
Archives page for more
detailed information about the work of our Archives Committee.
On July 24,
2007
The
Pemberton Chapel Garden was officially opened. The wheelchair
accessible garden is nestled between the hospital and the south side of the
Chapel and unites the two heritage sites, the Pemberton Memorial Chapel and
the Pemberton Operating Room. We have worked with the Victoria-Morioka
Society, who created the Dr. Inazo Nitobe Memorial Garden, and the Victoria
Medical Society who will be creating the Pemberton Operating Room Garden.
These three unique gardens, when complete, will achieve a unified oasis that
will be a garden sanctuary for the Royal Jubilee Hospital and the City of
Victoria.
Please visit
our
Chapel
page for current and
historical information, contemporary and archival photos, events and
information about the Chapel and
The
Pemberton Chapel Garden.
